Two James Stinson interviews from De:Bug from 2000 and 2002


Typical, you wait years for one 'lost' James Stinson interview to turn up then two show up at once! I was not aware of either before and just found a mention of a Drexciya interview with the German print magazine, De:Bug, on some music forum on a random Google search and they turned up on their website. I don't know how long they have been archived there, maybe for a long time. If you can read German then go straight to it here.

The first interview comes from January 2000 and was to support Drexciya's Neptune's Lair album on Tresor. This is quite an extensive interview but as I said the text is only in German. For English speakers I've used an online translation service (which is very far from perfect) and have archived just the questions and answers section below. I think it's close enough to get the gist of what he's saying and it means you actually have to read the text much more closely than usual to figure out for yourself what is being said, which is quite an interesting exercise. Although, if anyone has the time and would like to send me a closer translation please do. The second interview is much shorter and thankfully left his quite short answers in their original form, but in this case the questions are what get lost in translation. In both cases no journalist is credited.

De:Bug: How do you come to release music on different labels like Rephlex and UR?

It is perhaps to say: we are floating. If you have a relationship that is people based, then you may develop further, you can maintain a while, but then it may be that you are moving toward somewhere else. We move against the rules, and that is the one thing that we believe in, be against the rules. Not to do what someone tells us, and not to do what someone as the only road shows. Saying that we feel that it is a different way.

De:Bug: Who says you have to?

The industry. Such as Frank Sinatra said he made it in his own way, and this is exactly what we say. We do it our way. If we are dealing with other record companies, then we deal with other fragments of the business. Sure, you can say that 75% of the label your disks in the same area, but these sell 25% rest is also there. And in this way we are creating a larger territory.

De:Bug: Did you ever come to Europe?

No, but I plan it. For the year 2001, the 10th year of Drexciya. You could say that it was like in one of our songs, 'Species of the Pod', it takes ten years to hatch something, and if it is slipping, it is manifested as a completely different species. We have tested the water, if we have found a continuity, then we have here and there a record is released, then stop and again return to the laboratory in the cave, hibernating. 2001 is the time in which we travel, but now I go nowhere. There is too much work in the laboratory.

De:Bug: The tracks to Neptune's Lair have several different styles?

Yes. We try to have our music make something for everyone, 360 degrees, so that if someone does not like a track, he maybe can find another good one. If it is dance music or for listening, this is of no interest to us. We make music to the ears of the people to rejoice, because I wish to maintain the tradition that I grew up with. At that time, and heard the people music you happy powers. It was not made for ego or for money.

De:Bug: What kind of music was that?

I have heard everything. From new wave, Punk, Rock, Techno and Hip-Hop, or what it was at that time. Africa Bambaataa, Newcleus and so, and there was the P Funk Allstars, George Clinton, Jimi Hendrix, the B52's, Wham, everything. Here in Detroit new wave and hip-hop radio was most important. The musical talent of that time had a lot of energy and work in the music. It was not a matter of a couple of buttons to press. And we want to work just as hard ourselves.

De:Bug: Is it possible that in Detroit you are perceived in the same way as here? Very low profile, unknown, something mystical? The people look to you but on the street.

No, not really. I am very overcast. We are not in either posse, we do not go too often to parties and if there is a rather short time, inconspicuous, take care not to this "Show who you are"-Ding. I do not like this image to push. I must also not. It is more important to me if people can feel, what Drexciya is. This has nothing to do with the fact that we often had to see me. I want with my music like and perhaps with the visual impressions that it creates and accompany them. Animated videos to make better to show what Drexciya, because live videos are completely excluded, finally you had to add the real feeling of Drexciya to get a line in my head.

De:Bug: who really is your partner?

You know that I do not like to say, but well, it is Dopplereffekt. As we face a while Drexciya again on ice, to research, he decided to make his own project, and that is also nothing wrong. But we believe that the two things are very isolated. Maybe one day I work also solo, but now I am not ready yet. Drexciya can only be used with the two of us, because alone is simply a different sound.

De:Bug: Would the concept of water still be so important when you are working alone?

Let me say so. Water is the strongest element on this planet. If the polar caps would melt, then we were completely flooded, nobody could stand or as much water will evaporate. We are all dead, we're floating somewhere. It is the strongest, most dangerous, most beautiful, most fragile, most aggressive element there is. And that is what we are discussing. We are aggressive, lightweight, quiet, violent, can be beautiful, rough, ugly and all of these things with music.

Water is also the place where there are no problems, up here is so exhausting. We try to keep this violence of Drexciya. Drexciya is really peaceful. Therefore, we also always return to this peaceful, jazzy, ambience side of life. The military point of view that UR use is very strongly for us more as a reservoir. But after the reserve we always come back to Drexciya to be what we are, civilians.
I have met a lot of people, if you hear our tracks and the title to know, understand and be able to feel, where we come from. We always title our tracks after we make them. Titles add an additional dimension for the tracks. If we make pieces, it is always also a moment we produce. It's all live in one or two takes. If something static noise, then there is the whole of a signature. It can never be remixed. This is important to us because we never saw anyone a Drexciya track remixes. We would not even ourselves. This destroys the music and what music should be. I hate it. And I see that as things happen, I despise. Remixes are an agent of segregation. There are various mixes for different "races". Why can it not only ne one for all, as it once was? Music is for everyone. You try to separate us so. The music industry. And the people are not talking time over all the R Kelley's and Whitney Houston's, you know it will probably still not time. They do not think about how the remix will be used for and why. On the so-called black radio stations was formerly everything, but now only "black music". The separates us mentally, and not so shall it be. And I will be not be a park of this plan of the industry.

De:Bug: But segregation was at least before.

Yes, there were always segregation, but we have tried to get rid of them. And in a certain way they have re-established. Then came the people really. Through the music. And they heard everything.

De:Bug: and it was also very important for the history of music Detroit.

Exactly, it brought things in gear. It was more fun. And the people were quieter, safer. Now everything is much one-sided. Tunnel Vision. There is no other taste more. This is not good.

De:Bug: What can you do?

I can only hold itself out. Not to participate and refuse me. The other must be aware of what is happening and cease to participate. Perhaps the people waking up in a sort of snowball effect.

De:Bug: Will the next Drexciya record again take so long?

No, this is the calm before the storm. You can hear it. See it on the titles. If you are truly intelligent and I like that the people who like Drexciya are all thinkers, intelligent people, then you will hear what is going to happen. We have to actually say nothing about. Listeners can Drexciya us the lyrics.

De:Bug: What do you think about the change of underground resistance has given some time ago, when she suddenly with high-tech radio as a kind of new focus appeared everywhere.

I can't talk about this. I am rather too remote from it. The reason for this is that I am not the vibes of the other wants to take over. I am sure own. But if you do a lot with someone are, then puts you in their nature, their movements and words. I do not in the music. I also try not to pursue what is musically happens. This gives me energy and keeps me fresh. I am trying to be myself in a certain way some of the things to be naive to hold. I do not know, do not know and I don't want to know. The only thing that I need to know is whether there you goes well, and you, whether it goes well and that you have will help if not.

James Stinson email interview from De:Bug magazine from 18th July 2002. The interviewer comments that the answers are very short and don't always answer what was asked (the translation of questions are not accurate so it is a little confusing but the answers are what he sent them).

De:Bug: What technology plays a role in the world of Drexciya?

Technology plays a big role in the Drexciyan R.E.S.T program. R.E.S.T= research, experimentation and science and technology.

You have new sound aesthetics on Harnessed The Storm, how did you change your production conditions?

 50% altered and it will be altered again and change is good.

What does a digital tsunami feels like?

Digital tsunami is like sitting in a 5×5 anti-gravity room set on zero gravity surrounded by speakers and the rich pure sounds pushes you in many different directions.

How exactly do The Other People Place and Transllusion projects fit with Drexciya and for what purpose is this?

They are some of the mechanisms that form and harness the storm that has been created. They are just two of six black stabilising spheres.

Furthermore, Drexciya makes it clear that inspiration for his own work comes pre-eminently from God, but in no case from the current electronic music, because that would destroy the experiments as Drexciya describes her sonic deep sea excursions. 

Not to say that their projects are bad.

Pluralism is also written underwater. The same applies to the musical tradition, because Drexciya's sonic fiction is anything but a seasonal business: 

It means everything. Without tradition there would be no music.

However, when tradition begins and where the musical present ceases, it will always remain secret, as the answer to the question of the public policy to be expected in the future suggests: 

In 1999 Drexciya was shedding a layer of skin. Now this is the new beginning, a few interviews will be done and there will be no more for quite some time. Due to a heavy R.E.S.T schedule.

Doplereffekt - Cellular Automata video and Entropy live shows



Dopplereffekt will be playing a very prestigious day event at this years Sonar festival in Barcelona, Spain on 15th June. It is one of their rare Entropy multi-media shows. Surprisingly this will be the first time they have played at this cutting edge festival.  Full details of show here.

It looks like there will be a free Entropy show in London on 6th June, you just need to book a place at this link. I don't know if Dopplereffekt will be appearing live, they are not on the poster but the second part looks to be the full Entropy show so maybe they are, unless they use a recording. Decide for yourself, if I was in London I would book a ticket for sure! It still looks very interesting though, the full text for the event is as follows...

The Event consists of two parts each an hour long:

(1) three short talks by young cosmologists about dark energy and dark matter, and how to measure it, followed by a question and answer session. The talks will highlight the excitement of working in this field, and will be pitched at a level accessible for the interested general public. The event will be hosted by Prof Lucie Green;

(2) a production in images, music and narrative called "Entropy – an immersive cosmic journey that tells the epic life story of the universe and its stars.". The narrator is Dr Dida Markovič, and the production is staged by Antivj artists, with a team of creative coders lead by Elie Zananiri and Arturo Castro and music composed by Dopplerffekt.

Leisure System have posted a 37+ minute video which contains visuals for the entire Cellular Automata album by Dopplereffekt. Enjoy your trip!

Dopplereffekt are no longer on the bill for this years Movement festival in their hometown of Detroit at the end of May due to Visa issues according to this post by booking agent, LittleBig.

New Arpanet show just listed on Resident Advisor for Lyon, France on 5th May. Not too long to wait for those lucky enough to attend.

This is a 4 hour Drexciya special from Radio Spiel-Trieb, from September 2007, that has been recently uploaded to Soundcloud.

After a long wait the WeMe website is up and running again. If you look at their catalogue they have a few Heinrich Mueller related releases at very decent prices, including the clear vinyl edition of the Der Zyklus album, Remormalon, for instance. A few nice test pressings left too and releases by DJ Stingray, worth a look

Jack Peoples - Laptop Cafe unreleased James Stinson project due on Clone Aqualung




Great and very unexpected news! Clone Aqualung will be releasing an unreleased James Stinson project, under the name Jack Peoples, on June 26th this year. It will be a mini vinyl LP under the name, Laptop Cafe. You can listen to samples of all six untitled tracks (there are 5 new tracks but there is a vocal and instrumental version of one) at Soundcloud, download the artwork and samples of all six tracks at Clone Distribution and listen to the same samples again at the Clone shop! This blurb accompanies the release...

'On the heels of the two "the other people place" releases in the early 2000’s another related mini album was already in the works. It never saw the light of day due to James Stinson’s untimely death. Finally it resurfaced on a long lost DAT tape.'

I wonder how many more unreleased projects and music there might be waiting in his vaults, time for Digital Aphrodisiac maybe? James Stinson is most definitely living on through his music and gaining more aliases and mystery too.

Dopplereffekt, Drexciya, The Other People Place: New releases, reissues etc




Both the 2LP reissue of Drexciya's Grava 4 (2002) album and The Other People Place's 12"Sunday Night Live at the Laptop Cafe, on Clone Aqualung are both now available to order from the Clone shop and elsewhere.

According to Leisure System's Bandcamp page for Dopplereffekt's Cellular Automata album, 'Our initial run of copies have sold out on pre-order. A restock is in progress, however it means that delivery of LP orders made after March 28th may be delayed until May 29th, 2017. Vinyl purchases still include an instant download of the album on release date. Our apologies for the inconvenience!' They have some images of the album there now and you can play the album's title track. For everyone who ordered before 28th March, the release date is still April 7th. Also, if you go the the  Leisure System  Facebook page you will find 3 short videos of tracks from Dopplereffekt's Cellular Automata album and all the tracks from the album are available to play on the Bandcamp page now.

In celebration of the first Dopplereffekt LP in ten years, Rudolf Klorzeiger and To-Nhan delivered a special mix of records from their personal collection tonight on Red Bull Radio.

A new Arpanet live show has just announced for Berlin, Germany on 21st July. The venue, OHM, is located in the former battery room of a disused power plant.

I've made a scan of the Drexciya entry from the now very rare book, Techno: The Rough Guide by Tim Barr from 2000. You can see it (and much more) in the 2000 folder at this public GoogleDrive link. This is a great little reference book I bought back in the day, which even though it looks very populist, covers pretty much everyone you would expect, there's even a Dopplereffekt entry. They used the very revealing un-sourced quote above, and the entry must have been written before they returned with Neptune's Lair in 1999. It's interesting to note that even for just their UR period of 1992-1997, Drexciya were already held in very high regard.

This a new radio show by Bob Thompson from the UK station, Purple Radio, which looks at the order of Drexciya's Storm Series and even references my own theory about this from 2005. It's an enjoyable listen with some great music and interesting insights.

There are 3 Drexciya themed mixes by this German DJ and longtime Drexciya fan, MRJN, over at Hear This, well worth a listen.

VLR have a new Drexciya mix, Seven Storms - The Dimensional Waves Transmissions, up on their Soundcloud.  Check out the rest of their Soundcloud account for other Gerald Donald and Drexciya themed mixes, quality stuff as always.

This is a new show from France's 'The Beat Radio Show', dedicated to James Stinson. I love their introduction and there are some great tracks selected. Back in November 2016 they did the same type of show for Gerald Donald. I think the name of the DJ of both shows is Stephan Bomba.

I shared a few videos recently on the DRL FB page that may have been influences on Drexciya or coincidently sound like them. Check out 'Frequency 7' by Visage, it's hard to believe this amazing track is from 1981 (there is even a vocal led version from 1979) and was just a B-side. This was a big tune in Detroit at the time and was championed on radio there by The Electrifying Mojo. I can certainly hear some elements of early Drexciya and the one-off projects, L.A.M. and Glass Domain. This track from 1982, by the French studio duo of Francis Rimbert and Frederick Roussea sounds kind of like a prototype Air maybe, their label, Record Makers, should reissue this one for sure, it's so close to some of Heinrich Mueller's signature sounds.

Straight No Chaser UR & Drexciya 1999 interview

Very many thanks to one of my readers who sent me a scan of the Underground Resistance article from the Summer 1999 issue of the now defunct UK magazine, Straight No Chaser. Here I've included just the Drexciya quotes and images, including a new image (to me) of James Stinson standing with other UR members. This inspiring piece was written by Tsutomu Noda and originally published in Japans's Ele-King magazine.

As I've never seen the original online before and think it's well worth sharing, I've created a public GoogleDrive folder to host the full scan (look in the 1999 folder and use link below). From now on I will also be adding other Drexciya/Heinrich Mueller press articles, record info sheets and any other printed matter pertaining to them in this folder for all to share and find more easily (please send me anything I don't have). Drexciya's Storm Series update


"...it came out of me and out of my partner from our soul, we dug it out of there, the one take, in the way it is, it’s a masterpiece, it’s a work of art and the energy that’s captured and whatever energy that’s projected, capture it, see what you feel. Cause everyone’s gonna interpret it differently, like a picture has a million and one stories or whatever, that’s basically what it is.” -James Stinson speaking about the Storm Series

Anyone who's interested in Drexciya's seven album Storm Series and the puzzle that eight albums were actually released between 2001 and 2002 will be interested in a new nugget of information that has come to light from Serge of Clone Records. Previously there has been no known way to tell which album is the odd one out and James Stinson never identified all of the Storm Series albums when interviewed (he only confirmed Harnessed The Storm, The Other People Place,The Opening of the Cerebral Gate and Abstract Thought). In 2005 when I looked in depth at all eight of the albums I speculated that Grava 4 was the odd one out but did find that it very much followed on conceptually and was closely related to the Storm Series.

This is how I summarised it at the time, if you have (a lot) of time you can click on each album (including Grava 4) and read my original posts as I followed the Storm Series. What I found is far from definitive and it includes my own assumptions and speculations but it was an honest attempt to figure it all out for myself and share these thoughts with other fans. I've compiled everything that James Stinson said on the matter as well about half way down this post.

#1 Drexciya - Harnessed The Storm: Drexciya get metaphorically kicked out of the paradise of their underwater home because they forget the meaning of life and so begin a journey of rediscovery.

#2 Transllusion - The Opening of the Cerebral Gate: They begin this journey by looking within and exploring their mental dimensions.

#3 The Other People Place - Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe: Next they follow love in all its forms.

#4 Abstract Thought  - Hypothetical Situations: They further stretch their minds by exploring 6 hypothetical situations.

#5 Lab Rat XL - Mice or Cyborg: They prepare their bodies for the physical trip home by carrying out 6 biological exercises.

#6 Transllusion - L.I.F.E.: They ultimately learn to overcome their fear of death, how to roll with the punches of life and remember the meaning of life, evolution. Paradise is regained at this point but now they go further.

#7 Shifted Phases - The Cosmic Memoirs of the Late Great Rupert J. Rosinthrope: They can now begin the physical journey through space which ends in their final flux before they arrive at their long sought ultimate utopia, the Drexciya Home Universe they find in Grava 4.

When Clone recently reissued Grava 4 they refereed to it as being one of the seven albums in the Storm Series. While I personally didn't agree with this I accepted what they were believed and agree that it was closely related. Someone referring to my list posted a comment on the Clone FB page that Grava 4 wasn't one of the Storms and Serge replied that “Grava 4 is most definitely one of the 7 storms. The list on the website you are referring to is speculative.” This is true about the list, I've always stressed it was my own opinion and left it open so that everyone could come up with their own combination of those 8 albums, deciding which one is the odd one out, what order they should be in and what the meaning of the series is etc.

I wasn't aware of Serge's comment until two days ago when I was messaged on FB about it. I decided to ask Serge why he was so sure, perhaps he had some inside information from James Stinson at the time. His reply implied that he did and he said that it was no secret as the 'Dimensional Release List' on James Stinson's Dimensional Waves website was the list of the Storms anyway, “This has been discussed of course and it's no secret! No problem if you question the info from the label (always do so). But the 7 albums also have been published on the website of the artist (which you can still find online somewhere).” You can see a screen grab of the list in question below...



I'm happy to have this alternate order to consider, DRL for me has always been about sharing the information/research; anything that gets people thinking and looking deeper into this rich subject will always be a good thing. In this case it's up to each reader to decide what they think about this new information from Serge, however, even he does remind us to always question the information from the label.

In this spirit then, if you do follow his line of thought there are further mysteries to consider. If you go by the 'Dimensional Release List' to identify the seven albums in the Storm Series, which I have always taken to be a general list of upcoming releases (it appears to be only the latest update with more to follow and it lists the first Transllusion 12” as well), you will see that the second Transllusion album, L.I.F.E., which came out on Rephlex in 2002, is missing from it. This implies that this album is the odd one out and should be seen as separate from the Storm Series. However, if you look at the label artwork for this album and its accompanying 12”, Third Eye, you will find it states, 'Transmitted by Dimensional Waves' and gives the ridedimensionalwaves email address as well. In fact the only album of the eight that does not have a variation of this text is Grava 4. Be warned, once you start looking more closely at any of these albums you will start to find things like this! Also in the artwork for L.I.F.E., you will discover seven brains/cells? (below), might these be random or have a deeper meaning to the Storm Series (dimensional brain waves?). I do agree that it is quite odd that L.I.F.E. is not included in the list, as that record must have been fully completed with titles and artwork etc, unlike Lab Rat XL (which is listed) which had to be released without titles or artwork as James Stinson had died before he could complete this.



If Grava 4 is really the final album in the Storm Series (which is where I would place it), it would certainly wrap things up quicker so to speak and mean that the Storm contained its own conclusion. There is even a certain symmetry to this with the first and last albums being by Drexciya. The odd album, L.I.F.E., could then be read as some kind of personal sign-off from James Stinson perhaps?

However, as interesting as this is, the whole point of the chaotic nature of the Storm Series in my view was to prepare yourself and discover the Drexciya Home Universe of Grava 4 and it does appear to follow on from the already space located Shifted Phases album. Grava 4 also includes the intriguing text, 'Earth scientist discovered the home planet of Drexciya on 2-14-2002. Within moments Dr. Blowfin was given the orders to initiate the seven dimensional cloaking-spheres to hide the other three planets from earths view.' If you take the 'seven dimensional cloaking spheres' to be the seven albums produced under the name Dimensional Waves, this text very much connects Grava 4 to the Storm Series, but is it looking back at the previous seven albums or is it the seventh and final album of the series itself? You could read the text either way and obviously I made the decision to read it the first way, which might have been a mistake.

To me there has always really been eight albums in the series and if I am correct I think Stinson might have thought about them in the same way too. For this reason he may well have told Serge that Grava 4 was part of the series, but meant this in a general way, but whether he actually said it was one of the seven we can only guess or accept what Serge has said as fact. Having thought about this new information and still always only speaking for myself, I still prefer my original order and understanding of the series but accept that it comes with a caveat now. With any great work of art each viewer will find what they want to find and the Storm Series was designed to work very much in this way.

I don't know how this will affect other people's opinions and beliefs about the Storm Series but I thought it was important to share this information and point out its pros and cons as I see them. I'd love to hear people's opinions about this, including that it's just great music at the end of the day and to simply enjoy it.

Luckily James Stinson spoke quite a lot about the Storm Series and I've compiled all of these quotes below from the Drexciya Speaks post.

"Harnessed The Storm is an ongoing process that consists of seven storms (albums) released around the world. So far three of the seven storms have hit earth (Drexciya, Transllusion, The Other People Place). The next four storms are in a holding pattern."

“Basically, we make all the records differently. "Harnessed The Storm" is one in a series of seven individual storms, which are LPs. The albums are sent to different labels. "Harnessed the Storm" is one, "Transllusion" is two and "The Other People's Place" is three. Much like storms or tornadoes, you don't know where or when they're going to show up, but there's four more. They were all made within one year. Each captures different emotions, abstract thoughts and has a different emotional ride and different experience.”

“(on Storms) We're really pushing the gas pedal now. I'm working at my own pace now. In the past, I would intentionally slow down to see what other people were going to do, but I'm tired of playing games. Now, I'm happy. This is my pace. Get on the gas, get off the gas and end up in a traffic jam."

"It really all depends on the mood. I really feel good. It was just something that had to come out. The way we produce is based on emotions and that time period, what's going in and out of our minds. What's going on personally in my life, my health, anything like that. Some of the songs came very quickly.”

“I feel great. For me and my partner, there was a lot of pressure and lot of personal things in my world being turned upside down (while making "Harnessed"). But we we're just clicking on all cylinders, we were just in that groove. With this different project, we had to make sure this one was totally different from the next one that comes out. We never intend to copy ourselves. Whatever comes out next, comes out next. "Harnessed" has a lot of personal memories. It's melancholy and very well-rounded. There's lot of different emotions: laid-back, mad, frustrated, happy . . . it has it all.”

“We’re changing gears and we thought it was time for something new, in the past Drexciya was for the real hardcore DJs, but we got to a stage where we were questioning the need to be hard all the time. It was time for something new so we went with it. At the same time, it wasn’t a planned move, we got into other, deeper concepts and created a musical storm. The works that we’re releasing this year will control this storm and they’ll be launched from various positions”

“I suppose we’re trying to say ‘enjoy life’ with these albums(Storms). The world has become a dark place and its our job to entertain, make people happy and put the fun back in the music. That’s what Drexciya is about in the first instance and that’s why our concepts have become deeper lately. Sure, we’re political and deal with reality, but we also leave the door open so people can create, explore and go into their own world.”

“Those two particular records(Transllusion, Other People Place), those two groups, are a part of storms of "Harnessed the Storm" Drexciya LP. All together there are seven LPs, which I call storms. So far you have The Other People Place, Transllusion, and you have Drexciya s "Harnessed The Storm", which is the first one. There’s no particular order that they’re going to be released in. The records are already done. Right now, storm number four is due up next to blow up off the coast of Portugal, which means that’s another record label I’m dealing with. There are certain reasons why I deal with certain record labels, because I want to see what’s going to happen, or whatever. In other words, all the record labels that I dealt with had different strengths and there’s a particular reason why I deal with them. After that, there’s going to be three more storms. They're already ready and they're just waiting to come down the line.”

“We’re going all over the place, we’re hitting everything. You know Drexciya, we give you a 360 degree angle of everything and that's the reason why we did this. Each (LP) one is totally different. There's a lot of different angles to this. We want you to feel each and every one of these angles. It's a variety show, in other words. They're all linked, but there are very small, little links that you have to really listen to and even look at the titles or artwork that's going to lead you to the next one and so forth and so on and you will see the cycle and the connection. Basically what this is, getting back to the record label thing, is that our production company, Dimensional Waves, which we go out and license our material to different record labels and different places. That's the way we want to do things, instead of being signed to just one. That's what fits our business needs. Being signed to someone would not be suitable for us, so we designed something here that’s kind of unique and not everyone can follow this logic, or not agree with what we do, and so on and so forth. They’ll say that we take music and give it to everyone else around the world. That doesn’t matter. As long as the people who listen to these records are satisfied, that’s all that matters. I don t care who’s getting rich off of this money, because that's not what I’m all about. If I’m not making myself rich, why should I make somebody else rich? I’m spreading the wealth around the world, and as long as the people keep getting the quality music that they're receiving, that's all that matters to me. And so far, it's working and I'm happy. Extremely happy, because the people are happy. If the people are not happy, I'm not happy, something has to be done.”

“(Title ‘Harnessed the Storm’) It relates to this whole situation directly with the seven storms that are brewing. It took a whole year to put together these seven albums. It was very, very violent and very chaotic in a lot of different ways. Ups and downs. If you're in the middle of a storm, you have your ups and downs. You have all the elements that there are on this planet that exist in a storm, from water to air, fire, electricity. You might have a cow or a truck mixed up in there too. Those are the images that we perceived when we made the music and that's how the concepts came about. To answer your question, it had a lot to do with the album and everything going on around us was very turbulent.”

“Yes, within the course of the full year they will be released. The next one that's coming out is called Abstract Thoughts, which should be out in the next month or two. The last three, I’ll keep those as a mystery. I'm pretty sure you'll catch up on that though with the little hints and such.”

“Well, basically what happened was that over the course of a year me and my partner created one hell of a storm as far as how many tracks we were making and how fast we were doing them and under different pressures and different things that was going on and that’s basically where the concept came from. It was just like total chaos, we basically controlled the storm, and basically within the storm was produced like seven different albums, Which was the first one, Harnessed The Storm, then there was the Transllusion, then there was The Other People Place and there are four albums on their way out now, their just in a holding pattern. Well basically in each one of the albums it’s a different feel. Something for everyone, some of the music you might like, some you might not like. But by the time you get finished with all seven it will be like a complete feeling that you will have, once you listen to all seven of them together.”

(meaning of Storm Series) “Actually that’s not for me to say, it’s up for the listener. It’s the same way it’s been from day one with all the Drexciya music. I could come out and say ok this is what it is, this is my intent, okay well what if that person listening to the record and that’s not what they feel, that’s not what they see. So basically, what I do like I have from day one, I don’t say anything about it. You listen to it, you tell me what you feel, because that’s the way I made it. You know, it came out of me and out of my partner from our soul, we dug it out of there, the one take, in the way it is, it’s a masterpiece, it’s a work of art and the energy that’s captured and whatever energy that’s projected, capture it, see what you feel. Cause everyone’s gonna interpret it differently like a picture has a million and one stories or whatever, that’s basically what it is.”

(many different aliases)“And that’s basically one of the reasons why we put them under different names, we couldn’t just put it under the Drexciya name. We had to basically break it up and give it its own identity so it can live and exist in it’s own world you know cause if it was under the Drexciya name I don’t think it would do so well, because Drexciya has a different kind of feel and vibe, it’s still Drexciya but it’s in a different state of incubation.”

(upcoming Storm Series release and other related projects) “One of the groups I’m just gonna mention is called Abstract Thoughts, that’s basically the only one I’m gonna speak on. Then of course my partner, he has a host of different solo projects or whatever and I’m not gonna really mention them. I’m pretty sure people know but I’m not gonna mention them all on his behalf. But there’s quite a few.”

(why so many releases now, it seems urgent) "It's not really a sense of urgency, it's like a run off, we were just filled up with energy which had to be released. Just an explosion, just let it go. So why should you stop the flow, if it's coming out let it go. It's not like it's gonna happen all the time, so go with it, see what happens.”

"There are some principles we have that we can't share with the world. At the moment we're working on unleashing the seven storms onto the world, which are seven albums that Drexciya is involved with that we're releasing into the world under a whole host of names, from a whole host of countries. It started with the first storm, which was the new Drexciya release. Then the second storm was Transllusion, which came out of Germany, then you had The Other People Place LP coming out of England. And now we've got four more storms in the works, coming from places like Portugal. They're just in a holding pattern, just waiting to be unleashed."

Daughter Produkt, Drexciya, The Other People Place, tributes and more


You can listen and download Heinrich Mueller's latest track, 'Direction Asymmetry' under his newly resurrected alias, Daughter Produkt, at this link. You will find it on the Dreamy Harbour 3LP compilation from Tresor. There is a great sample/vocal used, it must be one of his eeriest tracks for sure, love it.

There is a 2 minute sample of Heinrich Mueller's dreamy 'Lamb Shift Model' version of 'Where Did He Go … And Why' by As One from the 6 LP boxset, Brainbox, on De:Tuned from 2016.

A new live show for Dopplereffekt has been announced. They will play on 18th March in Vienna, Austria at what looks like a 5 year anniversary for a club night there. There are now 7 upcoming Dopplereffekt shows and 2 for Arpanet (click on links for the Resident Advisor list for each act)

The still travelling group art exhibition, The Ocean After Nature, which features a cabinet of Drexciya artefacts and The Otolith Group's, Hydra Decapita, film (which references the Drexciyan mythos) is now on show at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts, USA until March 18th of this year. "...I eventually ran a search for them and the first file that came up was an MP3 that turned out to be The Journey Home from their 1995 EP on Warp. It blew my mind. Creatively it was like nothing I had ever heard because at that point I was into mainstream house and trance. It was the equivalent of an Abba fan hearing Larry Levan for the first time. I’d never really heard much dance music made on analogue machines before, at least not music that had so much feeling."

This is a refreshingly personal piece written by DJ Jackmaster (Numbers label) about how he first encountered Drexciya and fell in love with The Other People Place album in particular. He lists his 5 favourite Drexciya related tracks as well.

While it's not '700 Million Light Years From Earth', but only a mere 39 light years away, the discovery of the Trappist-1 system is a nice coincidence considering the upcoming reissue of Drexciya's Grava 4. We could imagine it as part of the Drexciya Home Universe however, there is even a dwarf star at the centre of its 7 planets as foretold on 'White Dwarf' on the Shifted Phases album from their 7 album Storm Series. NASA even believe there might be water there!

The brilliant UK DJ and producer Dez Williams included this Drexciya tribute, 'Stinsoninspiration', on his Happiness is Pain album in 2014 on Transient Force (listen on YouTube here). This was a digital release and I actually can't find where you can still download it from but YouTube has most of the tracks.

'Drexion Caves' is a very nice Drexciya tribute from 2003 by $tinkworx aka US producer JT Stewart. The track appears on an EP of the same name on Keynote, listen here.

I've often wondered if 'Other People' by the mysterious Detroit in Effect was a tribute or reference to The Other People Place. The track is included on their 12", The Men You Never See Part 2, on Clone in 2003. I love it and still have it on vinyl. If you are into Drexciya or early Dopplereffekt you will probably love going down the D.I.E. rabbit-hole and this EP is a great place to start (must be time for a re-press too).

This above was a post I put up on the DRL Facebook page a month or so ago and DJ Maaco from D.I.E. kindly got in touch to resolve the question, "Nah, The Men You Never See predates The Other People Place by a few years. The first time I learned of Stinson was around mid 2000's when I was introduced to Lab Rat while performing in Germany! The People From The Other Side are beings from another realm that can control your emotions through sound!"

There is a Helena Hauff Essential Mix from BBC Radio 1 with great tracks by Drexciya. DJ Stingray, Urban Tribe, The Exaltics, Photodementia, Aux 88, DMX Krew and tons more you will probably like. She is quite the Drexciya fan.

"I guess one night I was playing some Drexciya and he heard it, so he came down to the club. He introduced himself and said, ‘My name is James, I appreciate that you’re playing Detroit shit on the radio’. And he broke out. He came back a couple more times. After the second time I realised who he was. Then I’d see him around the city and it was a whole different vibe. I liked the way he wasn’t running around with a Drexciya T-shirt and saying his last name to everyone he met, with a UR headband on. It was really dope. It made it completely about the music.”

I've been sent a link for a recent petition set up by a fan, for Tresor to re-press the album by Shifted Phases, The Cosmic Memoirs Of The Late Great Rupert J. Rosinthrope (2002). Even though the album was re-pressed in about 2009, this double vinyl album currently sells for at least 100 euro on Discogs. A similar previous petition to re-press The Other People Place album could well have encouraged Warp to make their decision, so it could work.

For archival purposes, these are screen grabs of James Stinson's Ride Dimensional Waves website (below, click to enlarge). He made this very simple 1 page site back in 2001 using Geocities through Yahoo. When Geocities stopped operating it was hosted on a website by a fan, which in turn has also become inaccessible. The page can be still read through the original address through the Wayback Machine however. I forget how I originally found the link, as it's not mentioned on any of their records, probably through a search engine, but I do recall that the text, 'Ride The Wave', would follow your cursor when it was still working. It was also very cool to know that records by Lab Rat XL, Shifted Phases and Abstract Thought were going to be released way before they were (I got to bug people in record shops to keep an eye out for them on order sheets).

This beautiful instruction was also used in the Rephlex press release for Transllusion's L.I.F.E. album, which makes it doubly surprising that the record is not actually listed here. Perhaps it was one of the last albums of the Storm Series Stinson completed, even though the tracks on Lab Rat XL were never titled, which makes it appear to be the last one. I always regret that I didn't send an email to one of the many email addresses here, as it implies that he was very open to communication at this time. If you read the text closely there are plenty of unanswered questions too. For example, I've always wondered if there are unreleased tracks by Digital Aphrodisiac to be found in his archive, what was planned to be released on Isophlux Records and how advanced were their plans for the Deepfits clothing line? Sadly, he died just 3 months after his last update of the site.
